Article 1: The ADHD Chronicles: Meet Anya and Aaron

Meet Anya and Aaron

Anya and Aaron are two bright, energetic 7 year old  children who love to explore the world around them. Anya loves art and storytelling, while Aaron is always building the coolest creations with his Legos.

When Aaron enters the classroom, he brightens up the whole class with his energetic personality. He makes his classmates laugh and play all sorts of creative games. He is so active that his teacher has to tell him many times to sit down so she can start the class. When Aaron has finally settled down, he realises that he forgot to bring his pencil box even though his mother reminded him five times before he left home. His teacher isn’t surprised because this happens often with Aaron.

Aaron’s good friend Anya sits next to him in class. She is staring out the window with a faraway look in her face. Aaron knows that she is once again off on a journey in her imagination. Anya has a great imagination! That’s how she comes up with all her fabulous art and stories. When she is off on a journey in her mind, he has to shake her very hard to get her attention.

He wants to tell Anya what happened to him on the weekend, even though the teacher is taking class. Aaron suddenly turns to Anya and says, “Do you know what happened to me this weekend?”.

“Aaron!”, his teacher, Miss Kumar calls. “We’re in class right now. You can save your story for the break.”.

“Oh, sorry, Miss!” Aaron replies sheepishly.

Anya is very creative with her drawings and painting. Sometimes she gets so involved in her painting time that she doesn’t even realise she needs to go to the toilet. When she finally finishes her project, she suddenly realises that she has to rush to the toilet because she was so focused on her art.

Suddenly Anya jumps up from her seat and runs to the door. “Anya, where are you going?”.

“I really need to go to the toilet, Miss,” Anya exclaims, realizing she’d been too engrossed in her work to notice her physical needs earlier.

“Alright, you may go. Next time remember to do that during the break..”,her teacher explains calmly. “. And Aaron, you can talk to Anya then as well. Now let’s concentrate on Hindi.”.

As the two best friends settle down to focus on the lesson, we can see that Anya is quietly creating small sketches and doodles in the corners of her notebook page. Aaron is shaking his leg under the table and passing his pencil from one hand to the other constantly.

Miss Kumar understands that Anya and Aaron aren’t being difficult on purpose. They’re incredibly talented children who face unique challenges. She helps guide them back to the task at hand when their attention wanders or impulses take over. Their behaviour suggests that they may be experiencing symptoms of ADHD.

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, a condition that affects how the brain processes information. For Anya and Aaron, this results in challenges such as:

  • Difficulty focusing.
  • Trouble sitting still.
  • Challenges in controlling impulses.
  • Racing thoughts that make it hard to concentrate.
  • Restless bodies that won’t stop moving, even when they need to.
  • Difficulty making decisions.

Anya and Aaron’s Special Buddies

What’s behind Anya and Aaron’s unique challenges? They’re joined by some special “buddies” who influence their behavior in unexpected ways. These buddies represent the symptoms of ADHD, each bringing a mix of creativity and complexity.

  • One buddy keeps them constantly moving, even when they should stay still.
  • Another buddy distracts them with shiny new thoughts and ideas.
  • Yet another makes decisions feel overwhelming.

These buddies might cause mischief, but they also help Anya and Aaron discover creative solutions to their challenges.
